Todd Gipstein: On Assignment at Home: A National Geographic Photographer Shoots in Groton In-Person
Todd Gipstein is a new London native. After graduating Harvard College in 1974, Todd worked for Time-Life in New York and then back in Boston ran his own business, Gipstein Multi-Media. He specialized in making documentary media for museums and non-profits. His work included pieces about local places including the Union Railroad Station, Lyman Allyn Museum, Thames Science Center, O’Neill’s Monte Cristo Cottage, and New London Ledge Lighthouse.
In 1987, he began working for the National Geographic Society, and moved to D.C. to become their full-time Director of Multi-Image and an Executive Producer of media. His work for the Geographic took him all over the world as a photographer, producer, writer and lecturer. He still works for the Geographic on their Expedition ships around the world. Over the years, Todd has won dozens of gold medals, grand prizes and lifetime achievement awards.
Todd & his wife Marcia moved to Eastern Point in Groton in 2005. They spent 10 years on preservation work at Ledge Lighthouse. They also created a museum and gift shop in the light and ran tours to it.
Todd has written 4 historical fiction novels. All of them are about — or have connections to — the local area.
Tonight, Todd will share some of his work featuring the extraordinary history and sights we are lucky to have here in Groton and in the nearby waters.
